We produce four basic styles of custom wood loft ladders. They are raw (unfinished), sanded, stained and painted. All ladders are custom built to order in our Michigan shop from real 1-inch hardwood, not the 3/4-inch stock lumber that most factory ladders are made from. Whether you are looking for a rustic cabin with the look of natural wood or a painted finish to match the interior of a modern loft, we custom build to your exact specifications and dimensions.
Yes – every ladder we build is custom, meaning we can customize the height, width, rung spacing, rung depth and angle to suit your space exactly. We suggest to measure your floor to loft height carefully before ordering. Not sure how to measure or which configuration will work best in your space? Contact us before you place your order. We would far rather spend five minutes ensuring everything is right, than have you receive a ladder that does not fit perfectly.
Our ladders are mostly red oak and white oak. These are hardwoods, known for their strength and beautiful grain and great absorption of stain. We can also work with other types of wood depending on the requirements of your project. If you have an interest in a particular wood such as cedar, poplar or maple please contact us to discuss availability and pricing before you place your order.
You cut and assemble a raw ladder but leave it entirely unfinished—ideal if you want to apply your own stain, paint or oil. A sanded ladder has been sanded to a surface ready to be finished, and it is easy to apply any finish yourself. Stained Ladder Professional stain in a colour of your choice to bring out the natural grain of the wood. A painted ladder is fully coated in your selected paint colour and ready to install right out of the box.
The most important measurement is your floor-to-loft-floor height — measured straight up from the finished floor below to the finished floor of the loft above. Also consider how high above the loft floor you would like the ladder rails to extend for a handhold when climbing on and off, and whether your space has any width limitations. All measurements should be taken as accurately as possible, to the nearest quarter inch. If you have questions about what to measure, please contact us before ordering and we will walk you through it.
Our standard ladders are built at approximately 75 degrees. This is a comfortable climbing angle for everyday use in lofts, cabins, tiny homes, and bunk bed lofts. This angle offers a good compromise between safety and space usage. If you require a steeper or shallower angle for your specific space, please let us know when you place your order and we will adjust it accordingly.
Our ladders are built with real 1 inch hardwood using mortise and tenon joinery – one of the strongest wood connections used in furniture and construction. The way it’s built makes for a much stronger ladder than ones made with screws, staples, or pocket joinery. For specific load ratings for your particular application please contact us directly. We’re happy to discuss your project needs before you order.
