For decades, Country Neighbors has been creating custom wooden pieces. What started as a small family business has become a trusted source for custom rustic woodworking. Our commitment to quality, hand-craftsmanship and personal customer service is just as the very first piece we built.

No, no - never. Handmade, made to order, all our products are. We don’t have a factory floor or mass production.” When you order, your ladder, staircase or piece of furniture is custom-made, to your measurements and specifications, by the same craftsmen who have been making them for decades. Such is the way of Country Neighbors.

We are a manufacturing shop in Scottville, MI. Our primary market is a remote customer base across the country. If you are a Michigan local customer and would like to discuss a project in person, please call or email us first to schedule a conversation. We are happy to discuss your project before you place an order.

Products & Customization

We offer 4 main product categories: custom loft ladders, ladder hardware (mounting bars, hooks, brackets, rubber feet), rustic staircases (straight-run and spiral) and unique handcrafted pieces including rustic furniture and decor. All products are made of fine hardwood and made to your specifications. Browse all our products in the Shop.

Absolutely, customization is the heart and soul of everything we do. We don’t do cookie cutter. Loft ladders can be made to measure for height, width, number of rungs, spacing of rungs, depth of rungs, angle of ladder, type of wood and finish. With staircases you can choose your wood, the number of steps, the style of railing, finish and overall design. If there is something specific you want that is not on our website, please get in touch and we will work it through with you.

Our loft ladders are mostly made from premium hardwoods, including red oak and white oak, which are known for their strength, beautiful grain and ability to accept stain. For rustic staircases we use oak, hickory, maple and cherry all locally sourced and picked for durability and beauty. Please contact us before you order if you have a preference for a certain type of wood and we will tell you what we have available.

Our four finish levels give you full control over the final look of your ladder:

A raw ladder is cut and put together but left entirely unfinished. It is perfect for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to apply their own stain, paint or oil at home.

A sanded ladder ready for finishing. You can apply any finish you like without any prep work.

A stained ladder with a professional stain of your choice of color to enhance the natural grain and warmth of the wood.

A painted ladder is ready to install right out of the box, fully covered in your chosen paint color, sanded between coats.

Yes – we build both straight run and spiral staircases, custom made to fit your space. Spiral staircases work well in tight corners where a straight staircase won’t fit. Every staircase we make is a statement piece, crafted to reflect your style and built for strength. Staircase projects are priced on a case-by-case basis. Contact us to get started.

Yes – we have a Special Items section that features handcrafted rustic furniture, decorative pieces and unique wood art. These are things that don’t fit neatly into a product category, but they have the same level of craftsmanship and individuality as everything else we make. Check out our shop's Unique Pieces section, or contact us with your custom ideas.

Ordering & Pricing

Our loft ladders are sold by the rise (per rung). The initial rate for each finish level is:

Raw (unfinished) $75 per rise Sanded: $125.00/rise Stained: $200/increment Painted: $275 each rise

Your ladder price is determined by the number of rungs required to cover the height from floor to loft. The price you are quoted is the price you pay – there are no hidden costs to be paid after your order is completed.

The number of rungs depends on the height of the loft above the floor and the angle of the ladder. For a typical loft height of 8 to 10 feet, you will usually need 8 to 12 rungs, depending on the spacing between them. If you are not sure, call us with your floor-to-loft measurement and we will help you work out the correct number of rungs for your space before you order.

You can order direct from our website by choosing your ladder type and options from the product page. For custom dimensions, special wood species or staircase projects please contact us first to make sure everything is specified correctly before production begins. You can reach us by phone at +1 (231) 233-7473 or email at patrick@countryneighbors.com. You can also buy them from our Etsy or eBay shops.

Yes – we have an active Etsy shop and eBay store where you can browse and purchase our products. Both platforms allow you to read verified customer reviews from buyers all over the country. We also support direct orders through our website for maximum flexibility in custom configurations.

Standard customizations (height, width, rung spacing, finish, stain colour) and custom dimensions are part of our standard ordering process and are included in the per-rise pricing. Once your order is confirmed, there are no hidden charges or surprise fees. For non-standard requests like unusual wood species or very large configurations, any additional cost will be clearly communicated to you before production begins.

Staircase projects are quoted on a custom basis as each staircase is unique. Final cost depends on dimensions, number of steps, wood species, railing configuration and finish. Ready for a quote? Contact us with as much info as you can about your space and vision and we will come back with a clear, transparent price before any work begins.

Measurements & Preparation

The most important measurement is your floor to loft height, measured directly up from the finished floor below to the finished surface of your loft floor above. You might also want to consider:

The width you want your ladder (standard 18-24 inches). The height above the loft floor at which you want the rails for safety. Space limitations at the foot of the ladder (walls, furniture, doors).

All measurements should be as accurate as possible - to the quarter inch. If you are unsure about any part of the measuring process, please contact us before placing your order and we will guide you through it step by step.

That’s what we’re here for. Please contact us before ordering. Let us know your loft height, tell us about your space and what you plan to use the ladder for. We’ll help you decide the best height, angle, width and finish level for your particular situation. It is much easier to get it right before you start producing than to change it later.

Shipping & Delivery

Yes — we ship nationwide within the continental US. For decades we’ve been bringing handcrafted woodwork to customers in every corner of the country. Your order will be securely packed for safe arrival and will include full instructions for assembly and installation.

Each piece is handmade to order and production time depends on the current order queue and on the complexity of your project. If you have a deadline (renovation timeline, move-in date, event, etc.) please contact us before ordering so we can let you know if your timeline is feasible and plan accordingly.

You can follow the status of your order through the Track Order feature located at the top of our website. You will need your order number which will be provided to you upon confirmation of your order. Please contact us by phone or email if you have any problems tracking your order or have questions about the status of your order.

Yes – our ladder hardware (Top Deckers, hooks, brackets, rubber feet and anti-tip hardware) are available to order and ship separately. This is important for homeowners and contractors completing a new installation or replacing a worn component on an existing ladder.

Installation & Assembly

Yes – most customers do their own ladder installation or hire a local handyman to assist. The mounting bar (Top Decker) is attached to wall studs using standard fasteners and the ladder hooks onto the bar at the top. The base has rubber feet to protect the flooring. Most installations take less than an hour and require basic household tools. Each order includes installation guidance.

You can find the ladder hardware in our Ladder Hardware section. If you want a full installation kit – mounting bar, hooks and rubber feet – we have hardware bundles built to fit our custom ladders. We advise you to order hardware simultaneously with your ladder for correct sizing and matching.

Yes — all staircase kits come with clear, easy-to-follow assembly instructions. Before we finish and deliver, we have a client feedback step in our working process, so any questions about assembly can be addressed before your staircase leaves our workshop.

Returns, Changes & After-Sale Support

Each ladder is custom built to your specific measurements and specifications and we are unable to accept returns on custom orders. This is the reason why we ask all buyers to contact us before ordering to check measurements and details. If your order is damaged during shipping please contact us immediately and we will make it right with photos.

If you realize that something needs to be changed after you’ve placed your order please contact us as soon as possible. “If we haven’t started production yet, we can often change things. Once a piece is in production it becomes more difficult to make changes. The best way to avoid this situation is to discuss all the details with us before you confirm your order.

If there is a defect, shipping damage or anything else that does not match what you have ordered, please contact us immediately at +1 (231) 233-7473 or patrick@countryneighbors.com. We stand behind our work and will work with you to resolve any issues quickly.

Our products are made to last – using real 1-inch hardwood, mortise-and-tenon joinery and professional-grade finishes that will withstand decades of everyday use. If you have any problems with the quality or integrity of a particular piece please contact us directly and we will make it right. We take pride in our work and we stand by it.”
